The goal of Safety360 was to create an end-to-end usable web journey that could allow Discovery’s existing customer base, and potential new customers to purchase IoT devices for their homes or vehicles. These include standard smoke detectors, smoke detectors with air quality monitoring features, panic devices and stolen vehicle recovery devices.

The Problem
Discovery Insure is looking to start offering it’s customer base new products that can ensure their safety at home or in their vehicles by selling them IoT devices. As Discovery has never had a commerce-looking section of it’s website, a new user journey is needed to ensure that potential customers are informed about the new product offering before making their purchase.
BUSINESS GOALS
Safety360 was a very interesting project because the business utilised a unique approach in which they needed design to inform most, if not all of the decision making process. It was my duty to conceptualise the web designs and then bounce back and forth with communication from the business analysts and my team lead. As the designer, I created the screens first (of which would serve te documentation, specs and requirements that followed afterwards.

Discovery Insure endeavors to offer safety to not only our clients, but to the community as a whole, through our unique IoT device offering.
Devices for your vehicle
Our stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) devices offer real-time tracking and alert systems keeping you safe in the event of vehicle theft or hijacking. Whenever an emergency occurs, an alert is sent to our Insure24 team who are always available for assistance. They are able to inform you of suspicious driving behavior and send out recovery teams if necessary.

The biggest challenge I had with Safety360 is not knowing what the requirements of the project were and this shifted my usual workflow as a designer into a very different and unique one. This meant that I had to exercise my communication skills with the business analysts, senior designers and marketing department.
Safety360 was a great example of working within business constraints and allowing room for a sensible and visually interesting user experience.

Proposed Design Solutions
Research played a very big role in the Safety360 project. I decided to use a typical structure for my designs by proposing a landing page and a learn more page before the user decides to make a purchase. Once they added an item to the cart, they could finalise their purchase, register or login and resume their journey by filling in their personal & delivery details, accept the insurance mandate, make their payment and await their new device.
Next Steps
Research & communication was a big element of this project and out of the many lessons it taught me as a designer, a big one is that flexibility and collaboration are very important skills to have and practice as a designer. This project was an exciting concept part of the upcoming IoT rollout at Discovery Insure and the final designs may be vastly different from this current version.
